How BMI is calculated

  • Metric: BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m) x height (m))
  • US: BMI = (weight (lb) / (height (in) x height (in))) x 703

Important notes

  • These categories apply to adults 20 and older. For ages 2-19, BMI must be read using age- and sex-specific percentiles - use the child BMI calculator.
  • BMI does not measure body fat directly and can over- or under-state body fat for some people. See the limitations of BMI.
