Ideal Weight Calculator
Estimate a healthy weight range for your height. This calculator shows the
four most-cited formulas alongside the healthy weight range from
BMI 18.5 to 25. Treat the result as a guide, not a personal
target - and everything is calculated privately in your browser.
How ideal weight is estimated
"Ideal body weight" formulas were originally developed for medical dosing,
not as personal goals. The classic four - Robinson, Miller, Devine, and
Hamwi - each start from a base weight at 5 feet of height and add a fixed
amount per inch above that, with different numbers for men and women. They
typically disagree by a few kilograms, which is why we show a range.
None of them accounts for build, muscle, or body composition, so a very
muscular person can sit above these estimates while being perfectly
healthy. For most people the healthy weight range from BMI is just as
useful - see the BMI chart for the full ranges,
and our guide to the limitations of BMI for
context. To check where you carry weight, try the
waist-to-height ratio.
Ideal weight FAQ
What is ideal body weight?
Ideal body weight is an estimate of a healthy weight for a given height, originally developed for medical dosing. Several formulas exist (Robinson, Miller, Devine, Hamwi), and they disagree by a few kilograms, so the result is best read as a range rather than a single number.
Which formula is most accurate?
No single formula is definitive - they were derived from different populations and none accounts for build, muscle, or body composition. That is why this calculator shows all four plus the healthy weight range from BMI 18.5-25, which is often the more useful guide.
Should I treat this as a goal weight?
No. These are population-level estimates, not a personal target or a prescription to lose or gain weight. Healthy weight depends on far more than height. If you have questions about your weight, discuss them with a qualified healthcare provider.
How does this relate to BMI?
The healthy weight range shown is simply the weights that fall in the BMI 18.5-25 band for your height. You can calculate your current BMI on the main BMI calculator and see the full ranges on the BMI chart.
